Rhodes - Old and Older

Rhodes has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as the city built by the Hospitaller Knights of St. John is one of the best preserved medieval towns in Europe. After this group of Knights Templar were forced out of Italy, they were granted possession of Rhodes in 1309, and remained for the next two centuries, until losing the island to the Ottoman Turks.
This is the 14th century "Street of the Knights". This is one of the towers of the palace of the Grand Master. Some of the walls of the Knight's medieval city.
The Byzantine-era cathedral has amazing frescoes. And of course, there is always restoration and scaffolding. Our group is huddled in the shade while our guide gives some history. I saw several of these Gypsy children, playing simple tunes and hoping for change. Mostly they looked bored. This one was the sweetest, with her little puppy.Outside the city was an arena where games were played. This view is looking up from the arena floor. And this is the view looking down. On the right can be seen the start of the race track. This is the long straight foot-race track.
And there is always a nearby temple. Looking down at the city of Rhodes, with a large cruise ship in the harbor.

What incredible frescoes. I bet you dropped some coins into the little gypsy girl's bowl!
We'll miss you at the guild party Thursday.
