First Day on Rhodes

After a short flight from Crete, we arrived on the island of Rhodes. This is the view from our hotel room. The mountains of Turkey (I think) can be faintly seen across the sea. The round tank on the roof to the left is a solar hot-water heater, seen on many Greek housetops. We stopped briefly at the harbor with its ornate fountain and medieval church. These columns mark the entrance to the harbor and the spot where the famed Colossus of Rhodes was said to have stood, around 300 BC.

Behind the yachts, the medieval fort is located on the far side of the harbor, as part of the walls. A romantic view of the city walls and the Grand Master's Palace walls - part of the medieval city built by the Knights Hospitallers (more later). A less romantic view of the city walls. A view of the extensive beach.A closer view of the beach - very pebbly, not for bare feet. The umbrellas are owned by individual businesses and they are rented by the hour. (I didn't know this and was told to move.) A plaza in the modern city.and a downtown street. Pigeons on the tile roof of a beautiful home. Another building with tilework on the walls. Although most of the city seemed prosperous and well-cared for, this abandoned and crumbling home fascinated me as it was just across the street from our very modern hotel. I would have loved to explore it. Another view of abandoned windows.
